Van Brett Watkins, the man who fired the shots in a plot by former Carolina Panthers player Rae Carruth to kill Carruth's pregnant girlfriend, has died in prison at the age of 63. Watkins had been serving a sentence of more than 50 years for second-degree murder, conspiracy, and other charges. He died from natural causes at a hospital. Carruth, who was acquitted of first-degree murder but convicted of conspiracy to commit murder, was released from prison in 2018.
